Thailand

Thailand, located in Southeast Asia, is a country renowned for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. From the bustling streets of Bangkok, adorned with ornate temples and lively markets, to the idyllic beaches of Phuket and Krabi, Thailand offers a diverse tapestry of experiences. Rich in history, the nation seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern dynamism, attracting millions of visitors each year to explore its enchanting temples, indulge in delectable cuisine, and immerse themselves in the tropical beauty of its islands.

Whether you are spending one week, one month, one year, or one decade in Thailand, this country has so much to offer. From the beautiful beaches, and mouth-watering food, to the lush landscape, kind and generous culture, and bustling streets, there’s something for everyone to do.

A few years back, I spent over three months living in Thailand, participating in a study abroad experience at Mahidol University in Bangkok. I had the most incredible time traveling around Thailand seeing, tasting, and experiencing all of what Thailand has to offer (spoiler: it’s a lot)! Let this be a guide for your upcoming trip to Thailand or inspire you to book a flight there.

This is a list of all of the places I loved traveling to when I lived there, and highly recommend anyone to add these places to their bucket list. Even beyond this list, there are so many more incredible places to experience.

Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is a dynamic metropolis that seamlessly blends modernity with rich cultural heritage. Known for its bustling street life, ornate temples like Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Arun, and vibrant markets, Bangkok offers a kaleidoscope of experiences. From the lively energy of Khao San Road to the serene Chao Phraya River, the city captivates visitors with its diverse attractions, vibrant street food scene, and a skyline adorned with towering skyscrapers.

You will likely pass through Bangkok at least once on your trip, considering it’s the biggest city in the country and a large airport hub for international visitors. In three months, I spent quite a bit of time in and around the city.

Renowned for its historic temples, such as Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang Mai exudes a laid-back atmosphere and cultural richness. The city's Old Town, surrounded by ancient walls and moats, showcases traditional architecture, while its vibrant night markets and proximity to natural wonders like Doi Suthep offer a delightful blend of cultural exploration and outdoor adventures.

For as much as I liked Bangkok, I loved Chiang Mai just a bit more. It's the largest city in northern Thailand and is a mountainous region better known as the Thai highlands. I enjoyed wandering around the city trying the various restaurants, sights, and markets. I’d even recommend spending more time here than in Bangkok.

Here are the top recommendations I have for things to do in Chiang Mai:

Koh Chang

Koh Chang is the third biggest island in Thailand and sits on the east side of the country close to the border of Cambodia. For gorgeous blue beaches, lush landscapes, and fewer crowds than Phuket, this is the island for you. I spent a weekend here at a hotel on the ocean and loved relaxing at the pool or beach, which was steps away from our room. Even though it’s the third biggest island, it’s by far the lesser known island compared to islands in the western part of the country, but just as stunning (probably more so because there are fewer crowds).

You can reach this island from Bangkok by bus or car. I took a bus, and it was around a five or six-hour journey. Once you get off the bus, you hop on a ferry that takes you to the island. From the ferry, there were plenty of cars to take you to your hotel.

Here are some top things to do on Koh Chang:

  1. White Sand Beach: Relax on the sandy shores of White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao), one of the island's most popular beaches. Enjoy water activities, sunbathing, and beachfront dining.

  2. Explore Klong Plu Waterfall: Hike through the jungle to discover Klong Plu Waterfall, a scenic cascade surrounded by tropical vegetation.

  3. Snorkeling and Diving: Explore the underwater wonders around Koh Chang by snorkeling or diving. The island offers various dive sites with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life.

  4. Visit Lonely Beach: Experience the laid-back atmosphere of Lonely Beach, known for its relaxed vibe, beach bars, and nightlife. It's a popular spot for backpackers and those seeking a more casual environment.

  5. Island-Hopping Tours: Take boat trips to nearby islands like Koh Kood and Koh Mak. These tours often include snorkeling, beach visits, and the opportunity to explore the unique charm of each island.

  6. Enjoy Sunset at Kai Bae Viewpoint: Head to Kai Bae Viewpoint to witness a breathtaking sunset over the Gulf of Thailand. The viewpoint provides stunning panoramic views of the coastline and nearby islands.

Phuket

Phuket, Thailand's largest island, is a tropical paradise known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cultural richness. From the lively Patong Beach to the serene temples and viewpoints, Phuket offers a diverse range of experiences that attract travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.

You can’t have a list of epic places to go in Thailand and not include Phuket. The town itself is quite touristy, and if you stay near or on the main, busy parts of town, it might not be as relaxing, but there are stunning beaches in the area. And, of course, the biggest draw is the islands near Phuket that you can either stay a few nights or take a day tour to, including Naiyang Beach, Karon View Point, Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi Islands, and Railay Beach.

My biggest recommendation for Phuket and the surrounding area/islands is to do your research to get the most out of your beach vacation in Thailand, and I would not recommend staying near the main part of downtown Phuket unless you don’t mind large touristy crowds.

Phuket offers a wide range of activities for visitors. Here are the top things to do in Phuket, Thailand:

  1. Explore Old Phuket Town: Wander through the charming streets of Old Phuket Town, characterized by colorful Sino-Portuguese architecture, vibrant street art, and eclectic boutiques. Visit local cafes, art galleries, and the Thai Hua Museum to delve into the island's history and cultural heritage.

  4. Wat Chalong: Explore Wat Chalong, one of Phuket's most important Buddhist temples. Admire the intricate architecture, pay respects to the revered Luang Por Cham statue, and learn about the island's spiritual traditions.

  5. Karon Viewpoint (Three Beaches Hill): Take in breathtaking panoramic views of the Andaman Sea from the Karon Viewpoint, also known as the Three Beaches Hill. This popular viewpoint offers stunning vistas of Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon beaches.

  6. Phang Nga Bay Tour: Embark on a boat tour to Phang Nga Bay, famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, emerald-green waters, and iconic James Bond Island. Explore sea caves, kayak through mangrove forests, and marvel at the unique rock formations.

Ayutthaya & The Great Buddha of Thailand

A visit to Ayutthaya and The Great Buddha of Thailand is the perfect day trip from Bangkok. If you are driving from Bangkok, doing both in one day is feasible. Both of these locations offer you the chance to learn about a part of Thailand's history.

Ayutthaya, located just north of Bangkok, is an ancient city in Thailand and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam, Ayutthaya is known for its historical ruins, impressive temples, and rich cultural heritage. The city flourished from the 14th to the 18th centuries until it was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767.

Some key features of Ayutthaya include:

  1. Historical Park: The Ayutthaya Historical Park is a vast complex featuring the remains of temples, palaces, and statues. Explore iconic sites such as Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, each reflecting the grandeur of the ancient kingdom.

  4. Wat Chaiwatthanaram: Known for its imposing prang (tower), Wat Chaiwatthanaram is situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The temple's architecture is a blend of Khmer and Ayutthaya styles.

The Great Buddha of Thailand, also known as the Big Buddha, is a monumental statue located in Wat Muang temple in Ang Thong Province, not far from Ayutthaya. This massive statue, standing at over 92 meters tall, is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world.

Key features of The Great Buddha of Thailand include:

  1. Impressive Size: The statue is made of concrete and covered in gold paint. Its sheer size makes it a prominent landmark in the region, visible from a distance.

  2. Four-Arm Image: The Great Buddha of Thailand is depicted with four arms, each representing different aspects of Buddhism. The statue's design reflects a blend of traditional Thai and modern elements.
